DSL Services

DSL stands for “digital subscriber Line”. It is a medium for transferring data over regular phone lines and can be used to connect to the Internet.

The Digital Subscriber Line (DSL) is the latest modem technology that allows existing twisted pair telephone lines to transmit multimedia material and high speed data. Transfer speed can range from hundreds of thousand of bits per second up to several million bits per second. DSL is also referred to as a broadband technology. DSL has become a reliable service to meet the needs of customers who demand high-speed Internet access.

      1. Working of DSL

Like a dial-up connection, DSL uses telephone lines to connect to the internet. Phone lines are made of twisted copper wires knows as twisted-pair wiring.

Consider this twisted copper wiring as a three-lane highway with only one lane being used to carry voice data. DSL use the remaining two lanes to send and receive data separately at much higher frequencies. A DSL modem connects the computer data to the DSL line and then separates the types of signals so that they travel in the right lane on the twisted pair wiring. Voice data is sent at the lower speed while digital data is sent at much faster rate.

      1. Advantages of DSL:-

DSL technology uses advantages modems to achieve high data rates over standard twisted-pair copper cable in the local loop. It has the following advantages:

  • The speed of DSL is much higher than a regular modem.

  • Bad weather does not affect DSL service.

  • DSL service does not share the line with other network users in that area.

  • One can leave the internet connection open and still use the telephone line for voice calls.

  • In times of peak Internet usage, DSL speed is not affected.

  • DSL do not require new wiring. It can use the existing phone line.

      1. Disadvantages of DSL

  • DSL service is not available in all areas.

  • The quality and effectiveness of DSL service depend on the proximity to a phone company central office. A CO is the place where a receive DSL modem is located.

  • The connection is faster for receiving data than it is for sending data over the internet.
